Did you draw? Does Oregon have a general season for spring bear too?

Hi Gary, yes I did draw a tag in the controlled hunt. Yes there is a Spring general season too. It is in S.W. Oregon and it's a first come, first serve basis. Many bears in that part of the state.
How about Idaho? Controlled hunts, general, both or none?

I have seen a few in the southern part CA/OR. We hunt birds in Lakeview.
Which weapon will you use?
On a controlled hunt can you bait or is it fair chase? Good luck!

Hi Chet, hunt birds in Lakeview eh? Maybe we ought to try getting together sometime for a hunt. Do you hunt waterfowl or upland or both round there?
I use a Rem. 7 mm Mag with a 160 grain Nosler Accubond. Worked well for me a few years ago. No bait, fair chase only, with the exception of wounded animal calls. I prefer to spot and stalk myself.

Terry - basically the whole state has a general spring and fall hunt except for 2 units in which they have set a quota on tags and draw for both spring and fall. Most of the state you can run dogs or bait, but these two units you can do neither, so is basically a spot and stalk hunt. Its the same Unit I have elk hunted in for the last 10 years and I some times see more bear that elk. I haven't quite figured out what fish and game are trying to accomplish by over populating these units with bear, but it does make for an exciting bear hunt.
Congratulation on your draw, what area? Around k-falls? I got some cousins in the Medford area - he took one eating out of his dog dish in the back yard, so there must be a few over there.

Gary, my area I drew in is the N. Cascades unit. I will hunt off Hwy. 58 between Cresent and Oakridge. I had success there a few years back.
Medford you say eh? Well I grew up in Medford and left there in '93. I've been meaning to ask if your dad or perhaps a Uncle was a forester? My friend David Keiser mentioned he knew a forester named Sorenson from Idaho.

Terry - I used to hunt deer around Davis lake. Fished in a lot of the high lakes there and even hunted ducks with my bro-in-law somewhere up there in a snow storm. Had to check my sanity meter that day. Suspect you will be hunting the west slopes for bear?

I'm the only Sorenson in Idaho so must not have been a reletive. Dad worked out of Springfield for Weyerhaueser and my oldest brother retired as a forestry engineer for them, but none from Idaho.

Hope you're back in the saddle come hunting time. That would be the pits to have to sit that one out.

Gary, yea I hear you on checking that sanity meter. Been times when mine was just flat out of order! Funny how our trails cross one another. i am doing my honest to goodness best at protecting my knee so I can have a chance of going bear hunting. It opens Apr.1 so I've got a month. It's not much time but I hope my body kicks in and starts mending. If not I set my sights for Fall deer and elk. At least I know now what I am being patient for.
You going bear hunting?

We will be bear hunting, just a matter if we get our draw as to where it will be. Idaho is in no hurry to clue us in. Going shed hunting in your state tomorrow, on our way to Burns. Gotta get out of here for a couple days!!

Have fun shed hunting and Burns can use your spare change too. A friend of mine saw Elk a few days ago that hadn't dropped their horns yet. MMmmmm.
